Fiona joined the Patient Reported Outcomes Group in January 2014. Fiona completed her PhD in 2009 at the University of the West of England (UWE, Bristol), funded by the charity Breast Cancer Campaign, exploring the psychosocial impact and perception of ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), which is a very early stage of breast cancer increasingly detected by routine mammogram screening. Prior to joining the group she worked as a research fellow at Sheffield Hallam University where she was involved in a number of health and social care projects, including two projects focusing on new and innovative nursing roles.
Since joining the group, Fiona has led the REPORT-UK (Real-time Electronic Patient Outcome ReporTing of adverse events in UK cancer trials) project, funded by Cancer Research UK, which involved in developing, introducing and evaluating the feasibility and acceptability of a web based and telephone system for patients to self-report adverse events and other patient reported outcome measures in cancer trials. Since February 2016 Fiona has been leading the ePRIME (electronic Patient self-Reported outcomes to Improve cancer Management and patient Experiences) study, funded by Yorkshire Cancer Research, which is exploring an innovative approach for remote monitoring/support of patients, using electronic Patient Reported Outcome Measures (ePROMs) and re-designed care pathways.
Research interests
Fiona’s research interests centre on applied, patient-led research, including patient experiences and perceptions of health conditions, routine collection of quality of life and patient-reported outcomes in clinical practice, doctor patient communication, and researchers’ experiences of undertaking research in sensitive areas.
Teaching
Fiona is a tutor on the Research, Evaluation and Special Studies module of the year 1 MBChB course. She is also the lead supervisor for Kathleen Kane on the Breast Cancer Now funded LIBERATE PhD grant exploring symptom-reporting, self-management and signposting support for metastatic breast cancer.
Professional activities
Fiona is a member of the British Psychosocial Oncology Society (BPOS) and has previously sat on their executive committee. From January 2018 she has been a member of the Breast Cancer Now research grant committee.
