Carole Paley was originally a sports scientist and specialist musculoskeletal physiotherapist. She then became Head of Research and Innovation at Airedale NHS Foundation Trust from 2007-2021, before leaving the NHS for a post at the University of Leeds. She was appointed Project Manager for the LOCOMOTION long-covid study in 2021. Following this, she became a Research Fellow in Palliative Care. Most recently, she became a Research Fellow in the Patient Centred Outcomes Research Group in September 2025. Her PhD (2008-2013) focused on acupuncture for cancer-induced bone pain. During the past 14 years she has published widely in peer-reviewed journals including research papers and systematic reviews, many of which specialise in non-pharmaceutical approaches to pain management, including acupuncture, TENS and mindfulness.

Recent research includes the RESOLVE-i study investigating a brief mindfulness intervention to help with distress in advanced cancer patients and an update of the neuropathic pain treatment guidelines. She is now updating the EORTC colorectal guidelines.
